GUIDE TO SEARCH
ENGINES Overview
Search Engines are some of the most useful and powerful tools
on the Internet. They are designed to allow Internet users to search for any resource they
wish to find, and can perform these searches in seconds.
The most common Search Engine format is a keyword search. The
user types two or three keywords in a box about the subject or resource they are looking
for, and activates the search by clicking on a button. The Search Engine will then search
the World Wide Web, Newsgroups etc. and return a list of Site Addresses and short
descriptions of their content, which the user can then browse through.
One drawback of Search Engines can be that they simply
display too much information having little or no correlation with the subject searched
for. Some Search Engines are better than others, and the general rule, as usual, is to try
out each Search Engine and find which one you like best. It is usually handy to have two
or three bookmarked in case one is too busy and won't allow you to search.
How to Register with Search Engines
Another importance of Search Engines is that you can register
your Company's Domain Name and company details with them to make sure that they appear if
somebody searches for them. When you register, you will usually be requested to provide a
short description of the products and services your company provides. Searches of this
resume will be made by the Search Engines, so you must be careful to include all important
keywords about your site.
Sometimes you will have to register with each Search Engine
individually, but an excellent free service is provided by PostMaster and Submit-It!,
programs that register your site with over 20 leading Search Engines. It may be
time-consuming to fill the form out, but you must remember the benefits it will bring.
After all, there isn't much point having a Web Site if nobody knows about it, is there?
